Pool remodeling and equipment

Bought a house with a tired pool? Most can be brought back with a new surface, updated equipment and a few design changes.

Pool remodeling updates an existing inground pool instead of starting over. In the Huntsville area, that often means a homeowner bought a house with a pool that's 15 or 20 years old and wants it to look, feel and run like a new one. Typical work includes a new interior finish or liner, new tile and coping, a fresh deck, and modern pumps, filters, heaters, lighting and controls.

Signs your pool needs a remodel

  • Rough, stained or flaking plaster
  • Faded, wrinkled or leaking liner
  • Cracked or loose tile and coping
  • Loud, old or single-speed pump
  • Water loss you can't explain
  • Dated look that doesn't fit the house

Common remodel projects

  • Resurfacing concrete pools with plaster, quartz or pebble
  • Liner replacement on vinyl pools
  • Tile and coping replacement
  • Variable-speed pumps, new filters and heaters or heat pumps
  • LED lighting and app-based automation
  • Adding features like a tanning ledge, spa or bubblers
  • Safety upgrades such as new fencing, gates or a safety cover

Equipment worth a look

Pumps run many hours a day through a long Huntsville swim season. Variable-speed pumps can run slower for longer, which generally uses less electricity than older single-speed pumps. Heat pumps can stretch the season into spring and fall. Ask the builder for the specific models quoted and their warranties.

Remodel or replace?

If the shell or walls are structurally sound, remodeling almost always costs less than a new pool. If there are major structural cracks, failing walls or a pool far from what you want in size or shape, a new pool may be worth pricing. Ask the builder to explain what they found and why they recommend one or the other.

Safety barriers during a remodel

Madison County's barrier form, based on the 2018 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code, applies when a pool is new or altered and more than 24 inches deep. If your remodel counts as an alteration, the barrier may need to meet current rules. Ask about it before work starts.

What drives the price?

  • Pool size and finish choice
  • Tile, coping and deck scope
  • Equipment models
  • Repairs found once the pool is drained
  • New features and fencing

The builder you're connected with sets the price. We don't quote prices.

Common questions

How often does a plaster pool need resurfacing?

It depends on water chemistry and the finish. Plaster wears faster than quartz or pebble, which last longer before they need redoing.

Is a variable-speed pump worth it?

For pools that run many hours a day, variable-speed pumps generally use less electricity than single-speed pumps and run more quietly.

Can a remodel change the shape of my pool?

Some changes, like adding a tanning ledge or steps, are often possible in concrete pools. Major shape changes may cost close to a new pool.
